The first internationally trained horse to target The Everest, U S Navy Flag established himself as one of the world’s premier sprinters with a commanding all the way win in the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket.
It’s a tough 1200m on the undulating straight track and this northern hemisphere-bred three-year-old, with a Group 1 win at 1400m as a two-year-old, showed all his strength and stamina.
The win, his third at Group 1 level, earned him Coolmore’s slot in The Everest and stamped him as a serious contender.
“As he showed in the July Cup, he is a world-class weight for age sprinter,” Coolmore Australia’s Tom Magnier said.
“He has tremendous tactical speed and is a tough, competitive horse that should relish the challenge of Australian sprinting.
“Fingers crossed all goes to plan for him and he can present ready to give his best at Randwick in mid-October.
“It’s going to be an incredible race and he will add another fascinating dimension to it.”
U S Navy Flag is trained by the master Aidan O’Brien and he will be the champion trainer’s first Sydney runner.
There’s no doubt in the trainer’s mind that the colt is good enough to take on Australia’s best sprinters on their home turf.
“He’s had a tough time of it recently so to do what he did today – coming back down to a sprint from a mile – proves what a special horse he is,” O’Brien said.
