Menari has always had something of a boom on him thanks to a sharp turn of foot that puts his rivals away in the twinkling of an eye.
It was that trait, and the fact the best of the colt has yet to be seen, that led Max Whitby to take the punt and lock in the Gerald Ryan-trained sprinter for the 2018 Everest.
“He had terrific two-year-old form and obviously he is unproven but he showed at two and three he is the type of horse you need,’’ he said.
“He has a devastating turn of foot over the last 200m and Gerald is very bullish about him.
“We took everything into consideration and we just had to make the decision and we’re happy about it.’’
It’s been quickly forgotten that Menari started a short priced favourite in the Group 1 Golden Rose back in September 2017 but the 1400m trip found him out and he ran third behind stablemate Trapeze Artist, the early Everest favourite, who was a $41 chance that day.
Trainer Gerald Ryan has long been sold on Menari’s ability and is excited about what he could do come October 13.
“He’s a different horse, he’s grown into himself and is big and strong,’’ Ryan said.
