Despite being a winner over 2000m in the UK and 1600m in Hong Kong, Redkirk Warrior has really found his niche in Australia as a high class sprinter.
The seven-year-old chestnut has won three of his six Australian starts including the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington in March, becoming the first horse in over 100 years to win the race first-up from a spell.
David Hayes has long talked Redkirk Warrior up as an ideal type for The Everest and he proved he was on track with a first-up win in the Bobbie Lewis (1200m), also at Flemington, on September 16.
“If he gets the right conditions in Sydney it will take a real good one to beat him,” Hayes said.
“He’s a machine, he’s a super horse. He’s the best straight horse I have got. He travels so easily.’’
“His (Redkirk Warrior’s) first win in a race was over 2000 metres which shows his versatility and once we’ve got this sprinting out of the way in the next six weeks we will turn him into a middle distance horse and we might see a very special horse.”
