One of the most improved sprinters in Australia, Santa Ana Lane was transformed by trainer Anthony Freedman into a genuine Group 1 performer in 2017-18.
The gelding showed early promise, winning the Group 3 Zeditave Stakes at just his fourth start.
It took a while to notch his next win, in the Wagga Town Plate in 2017 under 61kg but from there the only way has been up and Group 1 wins in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) in Melbourne, The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide and the Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) cemented his place as a top line sprinter.
As an $80,000 purchase at the Melbourne Premier Sale, Inglis deputy chairman Arthur Inglis said the slot holder is “proud and excited” to be associated with the Santa Ana Lane team.
“Santa Ana Lane has proven himself to be one of Australia’s dominant sprinters having taken out the Goodwood in great style followed up immediately after by a win in the Stradbroke very impressively,” Inglis said.
“I’m sure I join all at Inglis in wishing Anthony Freedman and all the connections of Santa Ana Lane every success leading into The Everest this year.”
Following Santa Ana Lane’s Stradbroke win, which saw him become the first horse to win the Goodwood and Stradbroke, jockey Ben Melham was adamant he would be a force in the $13 million feature at Royal Randwick on October 13.
“He deserves a chance to run in a race like that I think,” Melham said back in June.
“And not only would he be a chance, he would be a good chance.”
